This event is for members of the ATA Medical Division only. \nThe Medical Translator’s Dictionary: What It No Longer Is and What It Could Become\nWith the arrival of the internet and the development of digital databases\, the lexicography industry was transformed: dictionaries—essential tools for every translator—ceased to be unwieldy tomes and became easily accessible works in the cloud\, easily editable\, expandable\, and universally available. And so\, it remained for over a decade. However\, with the popularization of generative artificial intelligence\, the landscape has shifted once again\, as the possibilities for retrieving and reusing information have multiplied—especially in the field of translation. \nWhat new paths are opening up in terms of services for translators and other language professionals? What considerations must be taken into account in the development and adaptation of tools for documentation\, translation\, post-editing\, and the revision of translated texts? In relation to these activities\, what is a dictionary today—a list of terms\, a database\, or rather a dynamic\, adaptable service available in many forms? \nIn this presentation\, I attempt to address these questions from the perspective of Cosnautas\, a publishing house specializing in resources for medical translators\, using primarily the case of Fernando Navarro’s Libro Rojo. \nAbout the Speaker\nJosé Antonio de la Riva Fort is a founding partner and director of Cosnautas\, a publishing house specializing in medical terminology and dictionaries for medical translators. He has a PhD in Comparative Literature (Universidad Autónoma de Madrid)\, a Master’s degree in Publishing (Universidad de Salamanca) and a major degree in Classics (Salamanca)\, where he came after a few years of liberal arts studies at Pontificia Universidad Católica del Perú. His career has two aspects—one as a language professional (proofreader\, editor\, project coordinator\, translator\, writer)\, mainly in the biomedical field\, and the other as a university lecturer (of classical languages\, ancient literature\, rhetoric\, and other related subjects). Mr. de la Riva Fort is interested in the intersections between the humanities and sciences on one side\, and between professional and academic realms on the other.

DESCRIPTION:ATA’s German Language Division (GLD) and the Delaware Valley Translators Association (DVTA) will be hosting a day dedicated to Pennsylvania Dutch at Southern Market in Lancaster\, Pennsylvania\, on July 19\, from 9:00am to 5:00pm. Optional social gatherings will be offered on July 18 as well. \nOur featured speaker will be Professor Mark Louden of the University of Wisconsin-Madison\, the author of Pennsylvania Dutch: The Story of an American Language. The program will present the history and present-day status of this German-language variant\, highlight gaps in interpreting services for the Plain community\, and offer attendees the opportunity to learn some Pennsylvania Dutch themselves.

DESCRIPTION:ATA awards a grant-in-aid to a student for a literary or sci-tech translation or translation-related project. The project\, which may be derived from any facet of translation studies\, should result in a project with post-grant applicability\, such as a publication\, a conference presentation\, or teaching materials. Computerized materials are ineligible\, as are dissertations and theses. Translations must be from a foreign language INTO ENGLISH. Previously untranslated works are preferred.

This webinar will cover the data you should be considering as you build your schedule\, how to make the work fit alongside your existing obligations\, questions you should ask the client\, and potential pitfalls to watch for. \nIn this webinar\, you will begin learning how to:\n\nMake a plan that is realistic and achievable by using your data and setting clear intentions.\nAsk the right questions before and during the project to avoid problems.\nStick to your carefully crafted plans. (This is no small feat when timelines are long!)\n\nAbout the Presenter\nLaurie Bennett is a Canadian certified French-to-English freelance translator with a background in agricultural engineering. Nine of her book translations (nonfiction work about regenerative farming\, rock climbing\, and true crime) have been published to date. Four more are on the way\, to be released in 2025 and 2026 by repeat clients with whom she has built lasting relationships. A member of ATA’s Business Practices Education Committee\, she strives to share tools and experience with colleagues so that—together—they can build sustainable and fulfilling freelance businesses.
